Senior Catador, Matt Metras has experienced the joy of agave spirits from absolutely every level, from harvesting agave pinas in the town of Tequila, to blending extra anejo barrels, to working the bar and hosting tequila tasting classes at his local cantina, Salena’s Mexican Restaurant. He has seen all facets of what it takes to make exceptional agave spirits and he brings this appreciation of the craft to all of his tasting adventures with Tequila Aficionado.
Blind tastings remove preconceived notions, allowing participants to evaluate mezcal purely on aroma, palate, and finish. In this Toronto-based event, attendees sampled 15 different expressions—served anonymously—to focus solely on what was in the glass. The results revealed surprising favorites, reinforcing that without labels or reputation, even well-known brands and lesser-known producers can be judged on equal footing.
